Official Specifications vs Working 2560x1440 Templates

According to official Google documentation:

• Minimum upload size: 2048 x 1152 pixels with a 16:9 aspect ratio.
• Official safe area at minimum dimension: 1235 x 338 pixels in the center of the image.
• Recommended upload size (especially for TV): 2560 x 1440 pixels.
• Maximum file size: 6 MB.

When working at the recommended 2560 x 1440 canvas resolution, designers commonly use a 1546 x 423 px working safe area template (which scales proportionally to the official minimum safe area).

Multi-Device Cropping Behavior

YouTube displays a single uploaded banner across different devices by cropping the image:

• TV displays: Typically display the full 16:9 canvas (2560 x 1440 px).
• Desktop and mobile displays: Display cropped horizontal sections. The central safe area is where core branding should remain to avoid clipping.
• Always verify: Because cropping behavior can vary across client views and updates, always verify your design inside YouTube Studio's interactive preview before publishing.

File Formats and 6MB Limit

YouTube accepts PNG, JPG, and WebP banner uploads up to 6MB. While PNG is ideal for sharp text and graphic illustrations, complex photographic artwork saved as uncompressed PNG can sometimes exceed 6MB. If your file is too large, saving as a high-quality JPEG (85–90%) or compressing the image will bring it under the 6MB limit.
